Background of the Study
Pain is a prevalent concern among older adults, affecting their quality of life, mobility, and overall well-being. In Niger State, where the elderly population is growing, effective pain management strategies are critical in ensuring that older adults can live fulfilling lives despite chronic conditions, such as arthritis, osteoarthritis, and other degenerative diseases (Aliyu et al., 2023). Pain in older adults can often be under-recognized and undertreated due to the misconceptions that pain is an inevitable part of aging, the complexities of assessing pain in elderly individuals, and the risks associated with certain pain medications.
This study will appraise the impact of pain management strategies for older adults in Niger State, particularly focusing on pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches. The research will explore how these strategies affect the overall well-being of older individuals, including their mobility, emotional health, and social interactions.
Statement of the Problem
Many older adults in Niger State suffer from chronic pain conditions, but the lack of comprehensive and appropriate pain management strategies can lead to decreased quality of life, increased disability, and mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. Despite the availability of pain management protocols, there is limited information on their implementation and effectiveness for older adults in Niger State. This study aims to evaluate the impact of current pain management practices in alleviating pain and improving the overall well-being of elderly individuals.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the effectiveness of pharmacological and non-pharmacological pain management strategies in older adults in Niger State.
To determine the impact of pain management strategies on the mobility and daily activities of elderly individuals in Niger State.
To explore the challenges faced by healthcare providers in managing pain among the elderly in Niger State.
Research Questions
How effective are the pharmacological and non-pharmacological pain management strategies in reducing pain among elderly individuals in Niger State?
What impact do pain management strategies have on the mobility and daily activities of elderly patients in Niger State?
What are the challenges healthcare providers face in implementing pain management strategies for older adults in Niger State?
Research Hypotheses
Pharmacological and non-pharmacological pain management strategies significantly reduce pain among elderly individuals in Niger State.
Pain management strategies improve the mobility and overall functioning of elderly individuals in Niger State.
Challenges such as insufficient training, limited access to pain relief medications, and healthcare infrastructure hinder the effectiveness of pain management for the elderly in Niger State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on older adults receiving pain management in both urban and rural areas of Niger State. Limitations may include the variability in healthcare accessibility and possible biases in reporting pain levels.
